El Cinco Foundation, which is backed by local Colombian corporate social responsibility, works with Asofrutas a cooperative of Mora (Andean Blackberry) farmers based in the municipality of La Ceja, in the department of Antioquia, Colombia. Hundreds of employees donate 5% of their income, matched by their employers, hence the name El Cinco (the Five: 5%).

The employees and companies have been backing El Cinco to work with the Mora farmers since 2003. At that time in the mountains around Medellin farmers were living in poverty, suffering high levels of kidnapping and landmines. Colombia’s main source of power is hydro-electricity and this mountainous region produces power for large parts of Colombia. For this reason armed groups were trying to control the area and interrupt the power supply. This situation catalysed the corporate social responsibility of companies in Medellin to take positive action in the mountains around them. Thanks to this help, the Moreros (Mora farmers) have prospered and their area is much more peaceful and so now they are able to supply their fruit to us here in Birmingham!

In 2011, the Colombian companies started a new corporate social responsibility project: the Fruquena Horticultural School (Fruta Pequena – Small Fruit i.e. berries like Mora). This came about as a result of research done by El Cinco into how many teenage children of the Moreros would like to stay living in the countryside, if there were opportunities. Click here to find out more.

I have met a couple of business people recently who talk about their bosses using ‘the stick’ principle of management. Not I believe a good biblical one! So in a time where there is still uncertainty as to which way the economy is going, and still uncertainty in the workplace, both in the public and the private sector, let us this month concentrate on bringing ‘words of encouragement’ to our workplace neighbours.

Acts 20 v 2: “Paul travelled through that area, speaking many words of encouragement to the people.”

As we do this can we continue to remember the HOPE we have as disciples of Jesus and may we be those who stand alongside our colleagues in the workplace who often have no hope. Now hard that must be for them! May we through our action and word mission follow the commandment of Jesus to:

Love the Lord our God with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our mind and with all our strength. And then to Love our neighbours as ourselves

A number of people have commented on the research I have mentioned before which shows that 70% of employees leave their manager and not the job. Do you encourage those around you?

A Gallup survey has shown that one of the 3 most important questions to workers is “Does my supervisor or someone at work seem to care about me as a person.” Do you care for those around you?

January saw the start of a 6 week God at Work course which took place in Urban Coffee Company on Church Street. The sessions were led by Revd Canon Nigel Hand of Birmingham Cathedral and a ChaplaincyPlus trustee. 21 people from a range of commercial organisations attended the course and 2 people were “virtual members” of the group being unable to attend and following the course materials and engaging by email.

“Thank you also for yet another thought provoking evening. Really enjoying the course and the company.”

The venue was comfortable and welcoming. The course materials were interesting and at times challenging, with lots of group discussions and the opportunity to meet and engage with new people.

“I am finding the course really good in its content and also meeting other Christians in the business community. Thanks for the homework!”

You are invited to an evening of personal reflections on faith, motivation and the law by Andrew Lancaster, President of Birmingham Law Society on Thursday 9 February.

This event is hosted by St Philips Chambers, LCF and ChaplaincyPlus. It will be of interest to all lawyers and other professionals considering what drives and motivates us and what are the issues that really matter in extraordinary times of uncertainty and change.

The evening commences at 5:45pm with a time of networking over drinks and nibbles, followed by an interview and talk by Andrew Lancaster, a Partner at Anthony Collins Solicitors and current President of Birmingham Law Society. There will also be an opportunity for questions and discussion.

Andrew is often in the public eye in and around Birmingham and like many lawyers, is a passionate advocate of our regional legal community and the key principles that underpin the legal profession. He believes that community provides support through huge change and is also interested in what sits behind our motivations as professionals. He will share something of his faith and the impact it has on the work that he does.

The evening will close at 7:30pm.

If you would like to attend please complete the booking form below.
